Mission: Translate an interstellar message, using the universal languages of math & science. Venture headfirst into the world of deciphering an alien language — completely from the ground up. Set in 1973, Earth is the recipient of a meteorite that broadcasts radio waves. In the role of the mission’s Translator, the player is responsible for designing responses to the meteorite’s transmissions, which, if correct, will elicit new messages from the meteorite. Only through this radio wave dialogue will patterns, words, syntax, and meaning all take form, leaving but one question: What is it the aliens want to say?

Beginning with the limited universal constants available to technologically advanced civilizations, the message spans a range of real-world fields of math & science. Decoding the message is tough, but with the support of The Message from Deep Space’s meticulous linguist, the single-minded computer programmer, and the affable astronomer, it is a challenge fit for anyone with Curiosity and Perseverance. The premise is that an alien meteorite has landed on Earth which is transmitting a signal, and a team of multidisciplinary experts has been tasked with investigating it. In practice, this means receiving data and figuring out what signal to send back based on the information it contains.

If the answer is correct, the signal changes and evolves in complexity over time. If it’s wrong, The Message from Deep Space will sometimes provide optional hints to help. The challenge, of course, is that the signal comes from an alien civilization that does not share the same conventions as humans. The goal is to translate these alien concepts into human-understandable vocabulary. The game includes a dictionary where aliases can be assigned to concepts to make the data more readable. A particularly enjoyable touch is that choosing certain aliases unlocks small snippets of dialogue, confirming that the interpretation is on the right track. The dictionary also makes the game somewhat similar to language translation games like *Chants of Sennaar*.

It evolves alongside the puzzles, keeping things engaging and preventing the experience from becoming stale. The Message from Deep Space is a puzzle game whose challenges are built around two core ideas: understanding the symbols and doing the math. It features a large amount of interesting content, and the puzzles become significantly more complex and in-depth as The Message from Deep Space progresses. One of its strongest aspects is how realistic the communication process feels. It presents a believable depiction of how an alien civilization might establish communication with another sapient species by developing a language through mathematics, introducing and testing concepts, and requiring those concepts to be applied.
